Dental practices can produce a lot of waste. Have you ever wondered what we’re doing to play our part in helping the environment?
While some of the products used in dental practice cannot be reused or recycled, there are a number of items that can. In partnership with Colgate, Harmony Dental has implemented a new recycling program.
What can I recycle?
The new recycling program takes empty toothpaste tubes and caps, toothbrushes, toothbrush and toothpaste tube outer packaging, floss containers. Just drop off your empty products to our practice and into our collection bin. Please note: Electronic toothbrushes and electronic toothbrush parts cannot be recycled through this program.
What we’re doing in the background
Internally, the Harmony Dental team are segregating general waste from recyclable waste. We have three new bins behind the scenes for general waste, recyclable waste and Redcycle waste (soft plastics).
Red Group has teamed up with Coles, Woolworths and some of Australia’s most-loved brands to make it easy for you to keep your plastic bags and soft plastic packaging out of landfill.
Redcycle is a recycling program that diverts flexible plastics (ones you can’t put in your kerbside recycling bin) from landfill and turns them into material that can be used to manufacture new products.
You may have heard our reception staff asking you if you would prefer a printed receipt or if an emailed receipt would be ok? We are a paperless practice, though reducing paper use is an ongoing effort.
Our Harmony Dental patient bags are made from recyclable paper and are filled with goodies to take home after your oral hygiene appointment.
We also stock biodegradable plastic bags when it’s necessary to use plastic.
Speaking of goodies, we now stock bamboo toothbrushes at our practice.
We understand that the many choices we make each day can impact our environment. Sometimes it’s a big choice… other times it’s as small as changing your toothbrush.
In Australia, over 30 million toothbrushes are used and disposed of by Australians each year, amounting to approximately 1000 tonnes of landfill each year. The plastic they’re made of won’t break down in our lifetime. Nor within the lifetime of our children. Imagine that on a global scale.
Invented by a Brisbane dentist, The Environmental Toothbrush is a simple solution. Made from bamboo, a natural cellulose fibre, the handles are biodegradable, environmentally sustainable, and do not pollute the environment. The amazing growth and self-renewing ability of bamboo means that deforestation is not necessary either. Even our packaging is bio-degradable. These toothbrushes are BPA-free and fair trade and vegan friendly.
